Problems of low temperature thermal fatigue are analysed and the investigations of the effect of cyclic temperature variations on strength of materials are reviewed. Results of authors investigation of the effects of cyclic temperature variations (within the interval of 293K-77K) on tensile strength of welded specimens of MOB copper and IH18N9T steel are presented. Specimens were subjected to the so called pure thermal and thermal-mechanical (with variable tensile force) fatigue within the interval of 0- 1000 thermal cycles. Both thermal and thermal-mechanical cycles were found not to affect the strength of welded joints of copper and to increase slightly the strength of joints of steel specimens.
