Zarodek makropęknięcia w ośrodku traktować będziemy jako zdarzenie rzadkie, wywołane nadzwyczajną lokalną kumulacją mikrorys, i prowadzące ostatecznie do zastosowania prawa prawdopodobieństw Poissona.

ON THE SIZE EFFECT IN BRITTLE BODIES CAPABLE TO SUSTAIN A CERTAIN CONCENTRATION OF MICRO-DAMAGE

The limit of proportionality and the strength of micro-non-homogeneous brittle bodies is considered as a function of the volume and analysed on the basis of the probability theory. The model assumed of the medium with microstructure is similar to that introduced in the papers by J. Murzewski (9) and S. D. Volkov (14) and consists in dividing the body into macro-elements Ω, and subdividing them into micro-elements O. A single micro-element damaged, the limit of proportionality between the stresses and strains is exceeded; to reach the ultimate strenght of the body V, a number r of micro-elements O belonging to the same macro-element Ω has to be damaged. One-dimensional states of stress a are considered in the paper. Two probability distributions are taken into account: the normal distribution (2.12) for micro-stresses s at the given micro-strength P=P, and the logarithmic normal distribution (2.26) for the micro-strength P at the fixed micro-stress s=σ. Statistical criteria of micro-cracking (exceeding the proportionality limit) are then developed for these two cases, Eqs. (2.24) and (3.1), respectively; they are illustrated by Figs. 3 and 5. In deducing the statistical criteria for macro-cracks forming, the hypergeometric probability distribution was used. This distribution is then approximated by the binomial distribution which tends asymptotically to the Poisson distribution (3.3). The relationship between the volume V and the strength limit R is finally expressed by Eq. (3.9), Fig. 6 and 7. The result differs from that found by S. D. Volkov [14] who — having made similar assumptions — erroneously introduced the Gauss asymptotic distribution. Certain simplifications make it possible to invert formula (3.12) and to represent it in the form of (3.16) or (3.17), Figs. 9 and 10. The discussion concerning the possibility of further simplifications and application of the simplest formula expressing the size effect (3.18) conclude the paper.
